Barber School Owner Pleads Guilty to GI Bill Scam

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The owner of a barber school has pleaded guilty to a scam that used $4.5 million in GI Bill tuition payments.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia said that Katherine Grobes claimed to train veterans at the school in Chesapeake. In reality, authorities said, she had most sign in and out of the school each day without receiving any education, much less taking any tests.
The 45-year-old ran the scam for five years, between 2011 and 2016. She faces up to five years in prison and will be sentenced in March.

Her husband, William Grobes, pleaded guilty in November.
