Veterans Share Poetry on Experiences for Memorial Day

GREENFIELD — In honor of Memorial Day, Preston Hood of Colrain stood on a hill alongside Poet’s Seat Tower Saturday afternoon and read personal poems inspired by his son Arrick.

As birds chirped and fluttered across the cloud-speckled sky behind him, Hood, a Navy SEAL during the Vietnam War, told listeners about Arrick, a Marine, who committed suicide in 2001 at the age of 21.

“Child on a swing, what snapped in you?” Hood read.

Leaving his small cement podium, Hood embraced Eric Wasileski, associate coordinator of Veterans for Peace Chapter 95, also known as the Daniel Shays Brigade.
