VMI Diversity Recruitment Plan Draft Missing Race-Centric Hiring

Virginia Military Institute (VMI) held a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) committee meeting Monday, wherein a staff member pointed out that VMI’s draft DEI Recruitment Plan did not cover race, ABC 13 News reported.

VMI’s Board of Visitors had ordered the creation of the DEI plan in October 2020. The plan draft had listed four hiring initiatives – one for women, one for veterans and disabled veterans, one for people with disabilities and the last to build “generational diversity,” ABC 13 News reported.

“I can’t help but notice that among them, race is not explicitly mentioned as one of the four hiring initiatives and I believe that is a mistake,” Lt. Col. Karen Bliss said.

The DEI plan will be completed in Spring 2021.
