Tax Assistance Program for Military Community Limited This Year Due to Pandemic

AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide, a program to help the military community file their tax returns, will have limited availability this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Tax-Aide is free and available – on an appointment-only basis – to veterans, military personnel and military families, regardless of age or AARP membership. It offers both in-person and virtual tax help.

The tax deadline for 2021 is April 15. Appointments for Tax-Aide can be made here.

Alternatives also giving free tax assistance are Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE), Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), IRS Free File and MilTax.

Veterans should note that VA payments exempt from federal taxes include – but are not limited to: VA education benefit payments, VA disability payments, VA life insurance policy interest, dependent-care assistance program benefits and payments made under a compensated work therapy program.
