Woman Sentenced for Stealing $260,000 from Wounded Warriors

A former government contractor at San Antonio Military Medical Center was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison for stealing more than $260,000 in donations meant to help wounded warriors.

Opal Jewel Charles, 67, of Cibolo pleaded guilty in June to federal charges of wire fraud and structuring bank deposits to evade detection.

At sentencing Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Xavier Rodriguez gave her 60 months in prison on each count, then ran the terms concurrently. He also ordered Charles to pay $260,000 in restitution, which was bilked from donations meant for the Warrior Transition Battalion at SAMMC, where Charles worked from 2004 to Dec. 7.
